Creative Sanctuary Group

People sit in a circle on chairs, they have different drums in front of them. They are looking to an instructor who is sharing drumming technique.

“I can explain what this project and group means in one word ‘Family’ because I don’t have family in the UK. This group is truly like my family. I enjoy it so much and I always look forward to our time together.”

Our group formed in 2020

With the support of Awards For All, we launched a new project that brings together people seeking sanctuary and those settled in Derby, for creative activities that support wellbeing, combat isolation and fosters community.

A few years on…

We’re still going strong, with the Creative Sanctuary group enjoying ‘Creative Inspire’ sessions from practitioners in puppetry, music, movement and theatre. Over the last year the sessions have been supported by Derby City Council, via their ESOL fund and by the Evan Cornish Foundation.

“I started working with Maison Foo and the group I am so happy, now I would never ever change city. Now with the [Creative Sanctuary] group I forgot the past. Now I have a new life and it is light, not like the past that was so dark.”

Soraya Bami, Creative Sanctuary Group member from Iran
